Predeceased by wife, Myrtle C. Jensen Bender. Mr. Bender was born on August 16, 1914 in Seattle, Washington. He was the son of Earl B. Bender and Eloise Gardner Bender. Mr. Bender was a retired Engineer with the Boeing Company, where he had worked for over 40 years. He married Myrtle Catherine Jensen on September 9, 1939. She passed away on May 13, 2004. Mr. Bender as a strong faith and love for the Lord and was a man of prayer. He was a gifted teacher, elder, choir conductor, and fine vocalist in the Presbyterian Church. He continually expressed immense gratitude to God for his family. In 1999, he and his wife moved to South Carolina and became members of East Bridge Presbyterian Church in Mt. Pleasant. 364	*Nekrolog: Stein Gauslaa* Norsk medieverden og en lang rekke venner og kolleger mistet en særdeles dyktig og kreativ pressemann og et varmt, kulturbevisst og humørfylt medmenneske da tidligere sjefredaktør Stein Gauslaa helt uventet døde lørdag 7. januar, bare 68 år gammel. Gauslaa startet sin journalistiske virksomhet i Nationen i 1971 og var så gjennom 25 år en markant og avholdt medarbeider i NRK Radio, VG og Dagens Næringsliv. I disse årene arbeidet han mest med politisk og økonomisk stoff, men hans allsidighet kom til uttrykk blant annet som en hyppig medarbeider i Dagsnytts lørdagsmagasin, Ukeslutt. Stein Gauslaa var nært knyttet til sin barndoms landsdel, Sørlandet. Hans far, Einar Gauslaa, var redaktør i Agderposten i 28 år. Det var derfor med stor glede, ydmykhet og pliktfølelse Stein svarte ja til å ta opp arven og bli sjefredaktør i avisen i 1996. Han ledet Agderposten i 13 år, en tid da avisen gjennomgikk store omstillinger. Dette styrte han godt med sin spesielle blanding av profesjonalitet og omgjengelighet. Også i presseorganisasjonene gjorde Gauslaa en god innsats. Men sørlendingen Stein Gauslaa var noe mer enn avislederen og den kloke skribenten i Agderpostens spalter. Hans samfunnsengasjement var bredt, og hans kunnskapstørst var umettelig. Det var derfor naturlig at han ble en av initiativtagerne til den årlige Arendalsuka, som på kort tid har etablert seg som en svært sentral arena i norsk samfunnsdebatt. Både på Sørlandet og blant hans mange venner i pressemiljøet i Oslo vil Stein Gauslaa bli husket som den fremragende yrkesutøver han var, men minst like mye for den rause, omgjengelige og musikalske personlighet han utstrålte. Som venn vil Stein bli savnet som det midtpunktet han alltid var i gode samvær, preget av hans lune humor og store glede over de gode samtaler. 365	Arvid Norman Myhre Navy Seabee, contractor recognized for restoration expertise. Arvid Norman Myhre, 91, avid motorcycle enthusiast and collector, died peacefully on August 13, 2021 in his DeLand, Florida home under the care of Haven Hospice and his beloved caretaker Gina Staffa. He was born in Staten Island, NY to proud Norwegian immigrants, Jenny and Silas Myhre. Graced with Viking wanderlust, Arvid left Staten Island at age 17 to explore the world on a cross country trek working his way to the California coast. He enlisted in the US Navy and become a 2nd class Petty Officer in the Seabees Construction Battalion, serving in Cuba and Bermuda during the Korean War. Following his military service, his education continued at Wentworth Institute in Boston and at New York University. A charismatic leader, he became the youngest president of the Staten Island South Shore Kiwanis Club. In 1958 Arvid took over the family construction business which was originally established in 1929. Arvid N. Myhre Construction specialized in commercial buildings and historic restoration in NY and NJ. In 1969, while renovating the Flemington Free Public Library, he moved the construction company to Flemington and partnered with his brother Bob of Frenchtown, NJ. The company worked on commercial buildings, restaurants, roads and bridges, municipal buildings, and libraries. The company was recognized by state of NJ for restoration and structural knowledge and restored several historical and landmarked sites including Mills on the Delaware River and Clinton NJ, Liberty Hall in Union, NJ , Drumthwacket, the official residence of the governor of NJ, and the Morven Museum in Princeton, NJ. Arvid was a committed civil servant and was an active member of the Flemington Rotary Service Club. He also served on the Delaware Township Zoning Board. He was a member of Sons of Norway, the American Legion, and the Copper Hill Country Club. Arvid had a lifelong love and appreciation for motorcycles and rode well into his 80s and procured a unique collection of vintage and modern motorcycles. He enjoyed hosting motorcycle racers and enthusiasts at his DeLand, FL home and particularly loved gathering with friends during the Daytona Bike Week Historic Motorcycle races. He also served on the Board of Trustees of the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation. Arvid was of strong moral character and believed in old-fashioned work ethic and was a committed and loyal friend. His vast social network included friends throughout the world. A gifted draftsman and skilled woodworker, he enjoyed taking on a challenge; from building a sailboat in Bermuda, to creating custom furniture, building Norwegian style bridal trunks, and restoration of a historic church in Rock Hall, MD. Arvid was preceded in death by his parents Jenny and Silas, brothers Andreas, Leif, John, and Robert, and sisters, Liv and Miriam. He is survived by his ex-wife Dorothy (Dotty) Jensen (m 1959-1991), Twin sons Leif Norman (Lucianne) of Steamboat Springs, CO, Erik Arvid of Lambertville, NJ and Karl Silas (Alicia) of Minneapolis, MN. He also leaves behind six loving grandchildren, Hallie, Tallak, Astrid, Anders, Mathias and Larkin as well as numerous nieces and nephews for whom he served as inspiration and mentor. 366	Betty A. Jensen, age 81, passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2018. Betty was born in Manawa, the daughter the late Arthur and Edna Beyer on September 1, 1937. She married Julian Jensen on September 20, 1958 in Manawa. Betty worked Kroger's Grocery and Kohls in the deli and meat department for over 25 years. Most importantly, she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Betty was an excellent cook, and liked canning and baking, she also loved to read her paperback Daniel Steele books and enjoyed gardening and flowers. She was a dedicated fisherwoman and travelled to Canada on fishing trips for 17 years with Julian where she caught and mounted her biggest Northern Pike. Betty was a life-long member at Trinity Lutheran Church in Menasha. She is survived by her children, Richard (Brenda) and David (Mary Jo); grandchildren, Adam (fiance Paula Owen) Jensen and their child, AJ, Heather (special friend Zack Fischer) Van Straten, Andrew (special friend Drew Mueller) Jensen, Travis (Stephanie) Suprise and their son, Micah; siblings, Lucille Noffke, Roger (Muriel) Beyer, Earl Beyer and Leroy (Jane) Beyer; sister-in-law, Ardyce (Kenneth) Johnson and Cheryl Beyer; special neighbor, Rose. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. 367	Elizabeth Ann Ludwigsen of Easton died at the Talbot Hospice House o Monday, March 11, 2013. She was 83. Born in Harrison, N.J., on March 9, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Ann Barry Lewis. Mrs. Ludwigsen spent her early years in Harrison, N.J., where she attended public school. On January 30, 1954, she married Arthur A Ludwigsen, they continued to make their home in N.J. until the early 1970s, when the family purchased a farm in the Millington area of Kent County. While Mr. Ludwigsen worked the family farm, Mrs. Ludwigsen worked as a clerk with the Kent County Department of Social Services. In 1981, due to health reasons the family moved back to N.J. Mr. Ludwigsen died in 1983. In the early 2000s, Mrs. Ludwigsen moved to Easton, where she enjoyed playing bingo and going to the slots with her social group. She loved spending time, and caring for her family. Mrs. Ludwigsen was a member of Sts Peter & Paul Parish, Easton. Mrs. Ludwigsen is survived by her to children, Kristine Sarrafian and her husband Michael of Pennsylvania and Arthur A Ludwigsen and his wife Carol of Easton; and four grandsons, Michael Ludwigsen, David Ludwigsen, Eric Sarrafian and Matthew Sarrafian. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, March 15, 2013, at Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Crumpton Cemetery, Crumpton. 368	Hildur Andersen Sarver, 92, of Florence, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2013, in a local healthcare facility after an illness. Hildur was born in Holt, Norway, a daughter of the late Gottfried Andersen and Hildur Jensen. She became a US citizen in 1929. She was a registered nurse and retired after thirty-two years from Glen Cove Hospital in Long Island, New York. Hildur was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church and of the Auditorium Sunday School Class. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Thomas A. Sarver and her brother, Harry Andersen. Hildur is survived by a daughter, Shirlee and her husband, John Iacono, of Coconut Creek, FL, and two sons, James and his wife, Tery, Sarver of West Chesterfield, VA, and Harry and his wife, Bobbie, of Florence, SC. 369	Julian Martin Jensen, of Menasha, was 81 years of age when he passed away. Julian was the son of the the late Robert "Bob" and Esther Burdick. Both Julian's parents were killed in accidents which left him and his sister, Ardyce, adopted by family members. Julian was adopted by his grandparents. Julian proudly served his county in the United States Marine Corps. during the Korean War. He married the love of his life, on September 20, 1958 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Symco, Wisconsin. Julian worked for Gilbert Paper until they closed; he then worked for Riverside paper for forty years until his retirement. For the past several years Julian has been an active member to Trinity Lutheran Church of Menasha. He enjoyed tending to his lawn, gardening, fishing and hunting. 371	Obituary Herman Selmanson Funeral for Herman Selmanson, a retired welder from Northeast Portland, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Johns Funeral Home. Interment will be in Skyline Memorial Gardens. Mr. Selmanson died Saturday in a local hospital. He was 72. Mr. Selmanson was born in Nelson County, N.D., where he graduated from Valley City High School. Before moving to Portland in 1951, Mr. Selmanson served with the Army Combat Engineers, building bridges for U.S. troops in Germany in World War II. In Portland, he was a welder for several steel and pipe companies and a member of Multnomah Hunters and Anglers Club. Survivors include his wife, Zena; and two daughters, Laura Selmanson of Newport Beach, Calif., and Bonnie Carbery of Portland. 372	Obituary Ingeborg Karine Emma Olson Mrs Emma Caroline Olson, nee Evensen, 73, wife of Knuth Olson and for more than 35 years a resident of this city, died at her home on 9^th Avenue South at 6:30 Wednesday evening after an illness with complication of diseases of more than four weeks. During her residence in this city, Mrs Olson had made many friends, being active in the Trinity Moravian church of which she was a charter member. She also has been a member of the Ladies'Aid society in that church since the inception, and was a member of the Golden Rule Prayer circle. Only last February 12 Mr and Mrs Olson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, at which time many friends and neighbors called at the home expressing congratulations and extending best wishes. Born in Norway Mrs Olson was born in Arendal, Norway, July 28, 1851, the daughter of Gunderson and Anna Caroline Evensen. There she grew to young womanhood and was united in marriage to Knuth Olson on February 12, 1874. To this union, six children was born, three of whom and the husband survive. After residing in Norway for fourteen years, the father and husband sailed for the United States, arriving in this country in 1888. One year later Mrs Olson with the five children then living joined her husband, the family making their home in this locality. A son, Frank, who died in infancy, was born in this city, and Mr and Mrs Olson suffered the loss of two sons in 1915 and 1916, Oscar M. and Ole James, respectively. Funeral Sunday Immediate surviving relatives are her husband, and elder sister residing in Arendal, Norway, two sons, Edwin A of this city and Walter K, a doctor in the governments' service at Ancon, Panama and one daughter Mary A. Olson of Wisconsin Rapids. Funeral services will be held at the home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and at the Trinity Moravian church at 2 p.m., burial taking place in the Forest Hill Cemetery. The rev. 373	OBITUARY MABEL E LARSEN: LIFELONG PEEKSKILL RESIDENT Mabel E Larsen, a lifelong Peekskill resident, died Saturday at the Jerome Nursing Home in New Britain, Conn. She was 83. The cause of death was not available. She was born May 12, 1906 in Rensselaer, NY, to Herman and Mabel Kroft Lent. Mrs. Larsen was raised and educated in Peekskill and graduated from high school in 1924. She married Sigurd O Larsen, also of Peekskill, on May 24, 1941. Mrs. Larsen was a secretary of Borden Ice Cream Co in Peekskill for 10 years before she retired in 1941 and became a homemaker. Mrs Larsen was an active member of the Cortlandt Senior Citizens Center. She is survived by a daughter, Judith Koenig, of Plantsville, Conn., a sister; Grace McCabe Burns of Boynton Beach, Fla; and two grandchildren. 374	RESIDENT HERE 40 YEARS DIES KNUTE OLSON, 80, FORMER OCEAN AND GREAT LAKES SAILOR, PASSES AWAY EARLY SUNDAY Knute Olson, a resident of this city for the past forty years, passed away at his home on Ninth avenue south early yesterday morning at the age of 80 years, 7 months and 29 days. Death came as the climax of an attack of cancer of the stomach, Mr. Olson having been in failing health for the past several months. The deceased settled here with his family in 1886. He was born in Arendale, Norway, April 15, 1846, being the eldest of ten children. On February 12, 1874, while yet in Norway, Mr. Olson was united in marriage to Emma Caroline Olson. Six children were born to this union, five being born in Norway. Voyage was made to America in 1885 and nearly two years later the family residence was made in what is now Wisconsin Rapids. Mrs. Olson preceded her husband in death on January 22, 1925, as mhave three sons, Oscar and Ole James in 1915 and 1916 respectively and Frank in infancy. For more than 25 years of his life Mr. Olson sailed the seas and after settling here sailed on the Great Lakes. The deceased is survived by one daughter, Mary A. Olson of Wisconsin Rapids, two sons, Edwin of Butte, Montana, and Dr. Walter K. Olson of Panama, besides three sisters in Norway and two sisters and a brother in the east. Funeral services will be held from the home on Ninth avenue south Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. J. R. Hoesman officiat ing. Burial will be made in Forest Hill cemetery. 375	Sally Bancroft, 81, of Lansdale, died Monday, June 7, 2021. She was the beloved wife of Harry Bancroft, Jr., her husband of 63 years. Born November 24, 1939 in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late Aksel and Sarah (McCaughey) Pedersen. Mrs. Bancroft was employed with Lansdale Medical Group for many years. Later, she worked with her husband at their family business, Banco Enterprises, until retiring in 2006. Sally graduated from Lincoln High School, Philadelphia, where she was a founder of the school's sorority and was a longtime, dedicated member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lansdale. She loved vacationing at the Pocono Mountains as well as the shore with her family and friends. Sally will also be remembered for hosting family holiday meals while wearing her famous apron. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Robert H. Bancroft (Terry) of Morgan Hill, CA, Thomas R. Bancroft (Mary Shortall) of Quakertown, David M. Bancroft (Rebecca) of Collegeville, and Sheri Lynn Swan (Keith) of Phoenix, AZ; and two grandchildren, Joshua Bancroft (Bianca) and Callan Swan. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Allen Pedersen and Richard Pedersen; and sister, Grace Adamescu. Det var under litt dramatiske omstendigheter at Lars Johnsen ble valgt til ordfører nr. 3 i Holt kommune, etter at Formannsskapslovene var blitt innført i 1837. Historikeren Gustav Sætra kaller det et bondeopprør da den allsidige presten Andreas Faye ble "avsatt" og Lars Johnsen valgt. Tidligere hadde, foruten Faye, den gamle høvding jernverkseier Aall styrt kommunen. Lars Johnsens tid som ordfører ble kortvarig. Han styrte Holt bare i perioden 1844-1847. Om hans virke som ordfører vet vi lite. Men han må ha vært både sterk og snarrådig. Som han en dag var ute i skogen ved Østerå kom en bjørn uforvarende på ham. Den var sint, reiste seg og slo efter ham. Lars unngikk slaget, grep tollekniven i den høire hånd, mens han kjørte den venstre inn i gapet på bjørnen. Så gav han den stikk på stikk i halsen og fikk til sist bukt med den. 382	A former town of Yorktown resident, Berthel N. Larsen, died yesterday at Grasslands Hospital where he had been a patient since Thursday. He was 51. Mr. Larsen lived in this area many years before moving to Trenton, N. J., in the I930's. where he was a construction superintendent. He had been ill for some time. Born in Brooklyn, N. Y.. he was a member of a masonic lodge there. Surviving are his wife. Mary Olson Larsen, of 230 Cresent Avenue, Trenton, and a brother, Sigurd, of Montrose. Funeral services will be held at the Clark Funeral Home, Yorktown Heights, on Thursday at 2 P.M., with interment following at Hillside Cemetery, Peekskill. 384	Adolf Aadnesen fortalte at Anne Gjertsen var den desidert beste kokka i området. Hun var født på Østerå og datter av skipperen Lars Gjertsen, som bl.a. første briggen Comforter av Tvedestrand. Skipsapoteket til Lars er i dag oppbevart på Aust-Agder kulturhistoriske senter (Aaks). Etter at mora døde, overtok Anne huset på Østerå, det som Arne Th. Aanonsen senere overtok. Som ung tjente Anne Gjertsen hos "bedre Oslofamilier" og fikk opplæring i husstell, finere selskapsmatlaging og servering. Da Ludvig Aadnesen skulle skaffe seg husholderske til de lange sommerferiene på Fugløya, var valget enkelt. Hun ble det faste holdepunktet på øya, godt likt av såvel familie som gjester. Anne kunne alt, og hun ordna med hushold og tjenerstab enkelt og uten problemer. I tillegg til sesongarbeidet på Fugløya tok hun enkelte oppdrag som kokke ved store anledninger. Blant barna sto Anne høyt i kurs, og når vi skulle reise hjem fra øya om kvelden, hadde hun alltid lagd matpakke til oss med mye godt; hummerklør, kjeks, sjokolade mmm. Da måtte Anne ha klem til takk, forteller Adolf. Anne hadde Ludvig Aadnesens lille hund Nipper i pensjon på Østerå i vinterhalvåret. Den var kraftig bortskjemt fra før, og Anne fortsatte med å skjemme den bort. Det var en stor begivenhet på Østerå når Nipper hadde gebursdag. Da holdt hun et morsomt selskap for Østerå-barna, med bløtkake og brus m.v. Nipper fikk pølse. Anne Gjertsen var Østeråpatriot på sin hals, og hun kunne mange historier. 396	Alice Hodgkins Dean, 102, passed away peacefully Jan. 17, 2012, at Windward Gardens in Camden. A lifelong and one of the oldest residents of Rockland, Alice was born Jan. 10, 1910, and was the daughter of David G. and Claire (Studley) Hodgkins. Alice and her three siblings grew up in the north end section of Rockland and she was a 1927 graduate of Rockland High School. Alice entered the workforce following high school and was selected as one of the first telephone operators to be hired in the Rockland office of the New England Telephone Company. In 1938, Alice married her soul mate, William T. Dean, in Rockland. The oldest living member of the Rockland Congregational Church having joined in 1927, Alice had been active with the Women's Guild in her younger years. Alice was a member of the Rockland Women's Club for many years and enjoyed playing Bridge. A devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Dean enjoyed her role as a homemaker. She looked forward to the annual fall trips to the White Mountains of New Hampshire with her husband. In her later years, Alice appreciated receiving telephone calls and spending time with friends and neighbors who talked about old times and local history. Alice could recall riding on the trolley car from Rockland to Oakland Park in Rockport for picnics on Sunday and dances there. As a child, she enjoyed rollicking buggy rides in a horse-drawn carriage with favorite uncle, Ted. Surviving are her two children, William T. Dean Jr. of Rockland and Claire D. Perry of Liberty; several nieces and nephews including a very special nephew, Stephen Hodgkins who kept in touch with her; cousin, Wendell and Helena Hodgkins; and several very dear friends, Annette Brooks, Bob Anderson, Irene Payson and Eleanor Eaton. Alice was predeceased by her husband, William T. Dean Sr., who died in 1990; brother, David G. Hodgkins Jr.; sisters, Lucille Tibbetts and Faye Winslow; niece, Katrina Hodgkins Windred, who died in 2010; cousin, Ruth Hodgkins Hewitt; great-nephew, Christopher Vose; and close friends, Nelson and Mary Glidden, Willie and Eleanor Sallinen, and Alice Glidden. A graveside service will be announced in the spring and will be held at Achorn Cemetery in Rockland. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. 397	Alice Larsen Gorman, 79, of Uvalde, Texas died Tuesday, March 8th, 2011 in San Antonio's Vitas - Methodist hospice. She had resided in Uvalde since 1968, and was born in Port Arthur, TX after her immediate relatives immigrated here from Norway decades earlier to work in the maritime industry. She was a Trinity University graduate, music major, and member of the Trinity Trio vocal ensemble which represented the school at many local and state-wide events during the 1940s and 1950s. Preceding her in death was her husband, Bill, in 1997 and her parents, Bert and Margaret Larsen of Port Arthur, TX. Alice has two surviving sons: Paul Gorman and wife, Debbie, of Johnson City, TN and Phil Gorman and wife, Frances, of Sealy, TX. She is also survived by 5 beloved adult grandchildren: Mark, Laura, and Lisa Gorman of Johnson City, TN and Aubrey and Buster Gorman of Sealy, TX. She has several living cousins of whom she had many fond childhood memories - especially those from frequent family gatherings at their grandparents' Port Arthur home. She taught kindergarten and elementary school music in Port Arthur and San Angelo, TX, and taught piano and voice lessons in her home up until her recent illness. She married Bill Gorman, also of Port Arthur, in 1955 after he returned home from naval service in the Korean War. A year later, they moved to San Angelo where they started a family and worked for 13 years before moving to Laredo briefly and then eventually settled in Uvalde. A private interment will be held by the immediate family at Greenlawn Cemetery in Port Arthur. A memorial service will be held on April 16th at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Uvalde.
