- Former Staten Islander Miriam Edkins, 78, a retired food service technician, died Friday at Fair Acres Geriatric Center in Media, Pennsylvania, where she had been a resident since 2006.
Born Miriam Myhre in Meiers Corners, she was a graduate of Port Richmond High School. She also lived in Prince's Bay before moving to Monmouth County, New Jersey in 1954, where she lived in West Keansburg, Middletown, Matawan, and Ocean Township before moving to Media in 2005.
Mrs. Edkins worked as a food service technician for the Aramark Corporation at Bell Labs, Homdel, New Jersey, from 1978 until retiring in 2001.
She enjoyed volunteering at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Manhattan. While living in New Jersey, she belonged to Bayside Community Church, North Middletown.
Her husband of thirty years, John J. Edkins, died in 2000.
Surviving are her son, Tom; two daughters, Karen Lepard and Diana K. Brookshire; a sister, Liv Olsen; three brothers, Andrew Arvid and Robert; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the Salem Evangelical Free Church, West Brighton.
Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
